Welcome to FPA - Flow of Presence Academy

Welcome to the Flow of Presence Academy. FPA is an international Academy of philosophical and interreligious dialogue and lays claim to centuries of continuous existence of the human search and its experiences of openness to the divine. Inspired by the lives and works of the German philosopher of experience and symbolisation, Eric Voegelin and the Dutch thinker and mystic Etty Hillesum, FPA encourages and develops reflection upon the relationship between human consciousness and history in order to articulate a comprehensive understanding of the overall range of available historical material concerning the human, spiritual and philosophical search of the human person.

ETTY HILLESUM AND THE FLOW OF PRESENCE

Meins G. S. Coetsier
has been awarded Doctor of Philosophy at Ghent University (Department of Philosophy and moral sciences) with a study on Eric Voegelin. His current PhD research is on the thinker and mystic Etty Hillesum and her Letters and Diaries. Coetsier's book 'Etty Hillesum and The Flow of Presence: A Voegelinian Analysis' came out July 2008 at University of Missouri Press. The following video introduces Etty Hillesum and gives you a flavor of her journeys to Camp Westerbork in the Netherlands, where she was detained; and Auschwitz in Poland, where she was imprisoned and murdered.

Etty Hillesum died at the age of twenty-nine in Auschwitz midway through WW II. All her energy had been absorbed in a daily search for the meaning of her life, for an understanding of her relationships with others, and for an insight into the ultimate purpose of each individual’s contribution to the well being and maintenance of the human spirit. Coetsier's writings are a Voegelinian exploration of the shifts in the mode of Hillesum’s human responsiveness to the divine presence. With Voegelin’s philosophical thought as his guideline, leading us to the heart of Hillesum’s mystical thought, Coetsier suggests that Etty Hillesum’s life and writings have provided us a welcome antidote to the restless and wandering spirit of a complex and turbulent era.
